Our mission statement is “Great Commandment, Great Commission; Chestnut Mountain, the world.” When we consider our Lord’s Great Commission, what does He mean by the summons to “make disciples”? Scripture indicates that the terms “disciple” and “Christian” are synonymous (Acts 11:26), and thus discipleship isn’t optional for those who claim the name of Christ.
Daily, all of us, as Jesus’ disciples, must die to self and put Him above all other relationships and earthly possessions (Luke 9:23; 14:25-27). We must be people of prayer (Luke 11:1) that seek to obey to God’s Word (John 8:31; Matt. 28:19-20), do His will (Matt. 12:48-50), and bear fruit for His glory (John 15:8). Men and women are called to invest themselves relationally in the lives of other believers, teaching and modeling Christ (2 Tim. 2:2; Titus 2:3-5).
Discipleship takes place each Sunday as we sit under the proclamation of God’s Word (cf. Matt. 5:1ff), but it happens largely in the context of intentional life-on-life relationships. Each week small groups meet for prayer, Bible study, Scripture memory, fellowship and accountability, with some groups focusing on some aspects more than others due to the context of their situation. These meetings take place at church—in the early morning and in the evening—in homes, over lunch and—to accommodate some work travel schedules—over the phone.
